By Joel Harrison and Neil Ridley

Unpacking the, at times, bewildering array of alcoholic spirits in an accessible yet comprehensive manner is no straight up task. Yet Distilled makes the cut. The size of an A5 notebook, hardcover bound and roughly the thickness of the phone book, this journey through the world of spirits is a tome packed with original photography, on trend artwork and helpful callout boxes all of which help to successfully present the information in bite, or make that shot, sized portions.

The book carries the sense of a mini-encyclopaedia with an cheerful, authoritative tone of voice to match. And like an encyclopaedia, its structure is clever. While each chapter is devoted to a particular spirit, which enables you to brush up on your knowledge of, say, whisky just before a dinner party, the book can also be read cover-to-cover, with each chapter building on the previous to provide a comprehensive understanding of the spirit categories, their production, and – most importantly – when and how to drink them.

Like so many food books, this is clearly a publication with coffee table aspirations, but we can think of no greatly compliment that to recommend leaving it on your drinks tray – which you’ll now be able to well stock with a carefully curated selection of spirits. Cheers!

From the Publisher

A guide to exploring the burgeoning world of craft spirits.

Today’s world of spirits is experiencing an explosive increase in craft distillers and pioneers of new distillates. It’s about men and women tearing up rule books and creating new spirits with extraordinary personality and passion.

This book uncovers the best spirits the world has to offer. These are not necessarily the best-known examples on the planet – though if they are good, they have a place here – but the best crafted and most interesting. Spirit by spirit Joel Harrison and Neil Ridley explain what you need to know to appreciate a spirit – its ingredients, its classic forms, the choices a distiller makes in creating it – and offer their picks to ‘Drink Before You Expire’ – the world’s best examples of their type, from gin and rum to shochu and tequila. There are plenty of suggestions for how to drink too, with innovative and classic cocktails and their insider tips on getting the best out of your spirits.
